This past Wednesday, the Raider Varsity Cheerleaders went to their first ever State UIL Competition. The girls competed against 45 other Varsity cheer squads in three categories: Band Dance, Fight Song, and Crowd Involvement. They were among the top ten overall and placed first in the  Band Dance category.

“I expected it to be pretty big, and it was,” Sophomore India Howay said. “There were originally 81 teams competing but it turned out that only 45 teams actually showed up. So that was good because it wasn’t quite as intimidating when we were competing.”

With the abundance of guidelines and the 80 other squads on their mind, the girls had to prepare with some long and tough practices.

“These practices were definitely different from our normal practices,” Howay said.  “We all knew we had to give 100% into everything we did, no matter how tired we were. They were also 2 to 3 hour practices, whereas our normal ones are about 1 to 1 and a half usually.”

Their effort in their practices and at competition was not for just a medal or a state title; it was for the validation of cheer as a legitimate sport.

“I really think cheer is a sport because if you look at all the other school sports they all have a UIL competition they can compete in,” Howay said. ”I think it’s great that we were able to compete for the first time ever and be in the top ten and are state champions in our Band dance. We all worked for so many hours and all pulled together. I couldn’t be more proud of us.”
