This past week, the girls’ varsity choir and members of the All-State band travelled to  San Antonio for a weekend full of music and performances. Six members of the Sunnyvale band performed at the All-State concert while the girls’ choir performed for the TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association).

Performing for TMEA is huge honor alone, but the varsity girls choir is the first ever 3A group to be selected to perform at the annual concert, making it a record-breaking accomplishment.

I can’t tell you how proud I was to hear that Sunnyvale Varsity Women’s Choir was chosen to sing at TMEA,” Fine Arts Director Mary-Jo Pickett said.  “It is the biggest honor a choir can receive in the state of Texas.

Six band members (Jimmie Henson, Seth Fredrickson, Ryan Deshazo, Vivian Tang, Daniel Marino, and Claire Salser) advanced past the All-Region and All-Area rounds to be able to perform in the All-State concert with ATSSB (Association of Texas Small School Bands).

“My favorite part of state this year was the scholarship ceremony they held after our performance,” Henson said. “They awarded all the 3 and 4 year members a scholarship signifying our accomplishments, and it felt great to be part of such a talented group.”

The choir department worked extremely hard to prepare for their performance. They met during the school day as well as outside of school for a total of about 50 hours since the beginning of the year to make sure everything would be perfect for the big night.

“It seemed crazy at the time to rehearse this much for one performance, but our performance truly showed our hard work,” freshman Helayna Barber said. “It was a lot of pressure, but that moment on stage was one we will never forget.”
